Hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio

The hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio, like other hermitages in the Majella mountain range, is set in a rocky spur about 50 meters long (164 feet), thanks to which it has been preserved in time. It is situated in the Vallone di Santo Spirito at about 700 meters above sea level, in the territory of the municipality of Roccamorice (Pescara).

It was built after 1250 by the hermit Pietro Angelerio, the future Pope Celestine V, on the ruins of an earlier structure. Along with the Grange of San Giorgio, the hermitage is functionally connected to the Hermitage of Santo Spirito a Majella. To access the church and the two small rooms intended for the hermits, there are four staircases: one to the north, composed of 30 irregular steps carved directly from the rock, one south, again carved out of the rock, but more irregular and longer, and finally two found in the center of the balcony, one of which functioned as the Holy Staircase. A deeply spiritual place on the Majella massif, it is a garden suspended over the sea.
