Pescocostanzo

Pescocostanzo (L’Aquila) is a jewel, a city of art and culture in the Apennines. Enclosed in a charming and fairytale-like natural landscape of rocks, forests and pastures, the harmonious town amazes visitors for the excellence of its architecture and urban planning.

Religious and civic buildings are not the only beautiful structures; even common houses evidence an extremely refined artistic expertise.

The inside of Chiesa di Santa Maria del Colle (called Collegiata), in the heart of the village, exemplifies this artistry with its dazzling images and impressive artifacts. The Baroque coffered ceiling is also notable, with its precious gilding and polychrome ornaments.

Also of great beauty are the Church and Convent of Gesù e Maria, the Chiesa del Suffragio, the ancient buildings, the monumental fountains, the typical houses with the “vignale” (the outside stairway with a small landing), the streets paved in white stones, and the industrious artisan shops (bobbin making, goldsmiths, carved wood and wrought iron).

At the feet of Mount Pizzalto, on the verdant plane extending north from the residential area, the hermitage of S. Michele Arcangelo can be found. It was built in a small cave, and encompasses a part made in stones and masonry. The stark contrast between the rustic structure of the vaulted ceiling and the fine inlays of local stone is striking.
