Castel del Monte
Nestled within the peaks of the Gran Sasso, at night a little star shines: it is the enchanting village of Castel del Monte, one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy. Castel del Monte is special and inspires visitors with a sense of the ancient, of tranquility, of a simple life. It offers striking views, with a network of internal paths, alleys and piazzas, antique portals, windows, “vignali” (external staircases), arched passageways, vaulted ceilings, and unusual house-towers. In the historic center, an interesting, outdoor museum itinerary includes six thematic stops: the mill, the hilltop oven, the art of wool, an antique house, shepherding, and work in the fields.
Castel del Monte is also a village of mystery and ancient superstitions. Every August 17 and 18, during the Night of the Witches, the evocative rite of the seven sports is performed (belief in witches was common in Abruzzo through the first half of the last century). It is an itinerant show through the narrow streets of the town and attracts many tourists, thanks also to the night lights that emphasize the village’s charm.
Along with being an important junction for ancient sheep tracks and nomadic herders, Castel del Monte is also known for its beautiful slopes for cross-country skiing.
